In most Australian cities a private jet has a choice: the main airport, which also handles the airlines, or a smaller general aviation airport that can be closer to town. The right one depends on the aircraft, the timing and where you are going. Here is how each city works.
Main airport or general aviation field?
The main airport has the longest runways, international customs and immigration (at the major airports) and business aviation facilities, so it takes the largest aircraft and is where international flights arrive. A general aviation airport is smaller and often closer to the city, and suits light aircraft and some jets, depending on the runway. Neither is better in every case; the choice is part of the plan.
City by city
| City | Main airport | Other airports we may use |
|---|---|---|
| Melbourne | Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) (MEL) | Essendon Fields; Avalon Airport |
| Sydney | Sydney Airport (Kingsford Smith) (SYD) | Bankstown Airport |
| Brisbane | Brisbane Airport (BNE) | Archerfield Airport |
| Perth | Perth Airport (PER) | Jandakot Airport |
| Adelaide | Adelaide Airport (ADL) | Parafield Airport |
| Canberra | Canberra Airport (CBR) | No second airport we normally use |
| Hobart | Hobart Airport (HBA) | Launceston Airport |
| Gold Coast | Gold Coast Airport (OOL) | No second airport we normally use |
| Cairns | Cairns Airport (CNS) | No second airport we normally use |
| Darwin | Darwin International Airport (DRW) | No second airport we normally use |
Each city page has the detail. Airport details are a guide and are confirmed in your quotation.
Where the choice matters most
In Melbourne the choice between Essendon Fields and Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine is the main decision; see the Melbourne airports guide and private jet hire in Melbourne. In Queensland the choice is between three airports for the south-east coast; see Brisbane, the Gold Coast or the Sunshine Coast. In Sydney the main airport’s curfew and slots shape the day.
Curfews and slots
Some airports limit the hours aircraft can use them. Sydney Airport runs a night curfew, generally from 11 pm to 6 am with limited exceptions, and controlled slots. Melbourne Airport has no night curfew. Other airports have their own rules, and some are limited by the hours of the control tower or fuel supply. We check them and tell you at quote stage what the airport allows. A flight that suits the curfew in Sydney is on the route in Sydney to Melbourne by private jet.
Customs and immigration
An international flight has to land first at an international airport with customs and immigration, such as Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, the Gold Coast, Cairns and Darwin, unless prior permission has been obtained for somewhere else. We plan arrivals and departures accordingly. See international private flights from Australia.
Remote and resort airfields
Resort and remote airfields have their own limits on runway, surface and fuel. Hamilton Island takes jets, as do Uluru (Connellan) and Broome; Uluru, Broome and Darwin by private jet covers what to check for remote places.
Regional airfields
Outside the capitals, the choice is usually simpler: one airport, which may be small. Regional airfields can have short runways, limited fuel and limited hours, so a turboprop or a light jet is often the aircraft that fits. We check the runway, the surface, the fuel and the opening hours before we quote, and we tell you if the airfield is a poor match for the aircraft you would like. The air taxi page covers the short-hop flying that uses these airfields most.
Three questions we ask
- Where are you going, and which airport is closest to it?
- How many people are travelling, and with what luggage?
- What time do you need to leave and arrive, and is there a curfew at either end?
The answers decide the airport more than the aircraft does, and they are why a quote from a team that asks them is more useful than a price from a website that does not.
How we choose
- The aircraft and the runway it needs
- Where you are going, and how long the ground transfer is from each airport
- The time of day, and any curfew or slot limits
- Whether the flight is international, and so needs customs and immigration
- The cost of landing, handling and parking at each option

Frequently asked questions
Do private jets use the same airport as airlines?
Often, yes: the main airport in each city handles business jets as well as airliners, using its own business aviation facilities. Many cities also have a closer general aviation airport that suits smaller aircraft.
Which Australian airport has a night curfew?
Sydney Airport has a night curfew, generally from 11 pm to 6 am with limited exceptions. Melbourne Airport does not. Other airports have their own limits, and we check them when we plan your departure time.
Can a private jet land at any airport?
No. The aircraft, the runway length, the surface, the facilities and the airport’s own rules all decide whether a particular airport suits a particular aircraft. We check this before we quote.
