Sydney to Melbourne by Private Jet: The Two-City Day

The country’s busiest corridor: flying times, airports and how a same-day return between Sydney and Melbourne fits together.

Sydney’s harbour and Opera House, one end of the Sydney to Melbourne corridor

Sydney and Melbourne are Australia’s two largest cities, around 705 km apart, and the route between them is one of the busiest in the country. It is also a natural fit for a private jet: short enough to go and come back in a day, and busy enough that the timetable rarely fits your meeting.

How long does it take?

The flying time depends on the aircraft. These are indicative figures for Melbourne to Sydney in either direction; Sydney and Melbourne share a time zone, so there is no clock change to allow for.

AircraftFlying time
Turbopropabout 1 h 50 min
Light jetabout 1 h 25 min
Midsize jetabout 1 h 20 min
Heavy jetabout 1 h 15 min

Indicative airport-to-airport times. The aircraft, winds and routing change them, and we confirm them in your quotation.

Which airport at each end?

In Melbourne you have a choice. Essendon Fields is close to the city and used by many light and midsize jets; Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine takes the largest aircraft and has no night curfew. Our Melbourne private jet airports guide explains how we choose between them.

In Sydney the main airport is Sydney Airport (Kingsford Smith). It runs a night curfew, generally from 11 pm to 6 am with limited exceptions, and controlled slots, so departure times are built around them. Bankstown Airport in the south-west can suit some smaller aircraft. See private jet hire Sydney for the detail.

What a same-day return looks like

Here is an illustration using a light jet, with times worked from the figures above. It is an example, not a timetable.

  • 7:00 am: depart Melbourne
  • About 8:25 am: land in Sydney, with a car waiting near where the aircraft stops
  • Day in Sydney: meetings, a site visit or an event
  • 4:30 pm: depart Sydney, well ahead of the curfew
  • About 5:55 pm: back in Melbourne

The point is not the minutes saved on the flight; it is that the day is built around your meeting rather than a timetable. If the meeting overruns, the departure moves with it, within the airport’s limits.

Choosing the aircraft

On a sector of this length a light jet suits most parties of up to five or six with normal luggage. A midsize jet gives you a taller cabin, more baggage space and a little more speed, which matters for larger groups or when the trip includes equipment. Our guide to choosing between a light jet and a midsize jet sets out the differences, and what a private jet charter costs explains what moves the price.

More than two cities

The corridor works best when it is part of a longer day. A common pattern is Melbourne to Canberra, Canberra to Sydney and back to Melbourne in the evening: about 1 h to Canberra, a short hop on to Sydney, then home. We cover how those days are put together in business travel by private jet.

Door to door, not wheels up to wheels down

The comparison with an airline is not the flying time, which is close; it is everything around it. A private flight lets you choose the airport nearest the meeting, leave when you are ready rather than at a scheduled time, and go from the car to the aircraft without a long walk through a busy terminal. At the other end, a car can meet you at the aircraft. Over a day with three or four commitments, those saved margins are what add up.

When an airline is the better answer

A single traveller with a fixed meeting time and no need for privacy is usually better served by a scheduled flight in business class, which costs far less for one person; see private jet vs business class in Australia. A charter makes sense when the party is four or more, when the schedule is tight, when the meeting might overrun, or when the people travelling need to talk on the way. If it is close, we quote both and show you the difference.

What to tell us

For a quick quote, send the date, the times of your first and last commitment, the number of passengers and the airports you would prefer. We recommend the aircraft, name the airport that suits it and quote the alternative if it is close.

When to book early

Peak dates fill quickly: major sporting events, the spring racing carnival and school holidays. Aircraft availability on those dates is very much subject to continued availability, so ask as early as you can. For the events that move the most people, see major Australian events by private jet, and for the biggest week of Melbourne’s year, spring racing and the Melbourne Cup.

If you are comparing options, our city-by-city airport guide shows where a private jet lands in each capital.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a private jet flight from Sydney to Melbourne?

About 1 h 25 min by light jet and about 1 h 20 min by midsize jet over roughly 705 km. Times are indicative and depend on the aircraft, the winds and the routing.

Is it worth chartering for a one-way trip?

It can be, particularly for a group or when timing matters. A one-way flight may also be available as an empty leg, which can cost less than a standard charter in exchange for flexibility.

Can we fly back late at night?

It depends on the airports. Sydney Airport has a night curfew, generally from 11 pm to 6 am with limited exceptions, so a late return needs to be planned well inside it. We tell you at quote stage what is possible.
