Private Jet to the Whitsundays and Hamilton Island

Land on the island itself: how a private jet changes the trip to the Whitsundays, and which aircraft suit which departure city.

Hamilton Island and the Whitsunday waters from above

The Whitsundays are one of the places where the time saved by a private jet is easiest to see. You can land on Hamilton Island itself and be at the resort or the marina within minutes, instead of connecting to a ferry or a seaplane.

Landing on the island

Hamilton Island has its own airport, with a runway that takes jets, a few minutes from the resort. Scheduled jet services run to it from the mainland capitals, and business jets use it too. Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine is the mainland alternative; it needs a transfer by road and then by boat, which is why most private travellers choose the island.

Indicative airport-to-airport times; a turboprop takes longer and suits the shorter legs from Brisbane and Cairns.

Which aircraft?

From Brisbane or Cairns a turboprop or light jet is enough. From Sydney a light jet works for small parties, and from Melbourne a midsize jet is more comfortable at around three hours, particularly with a full party of luggage. See light jet or midsize jet for how to decide, and the air taxi page for the short legs.

What people go for

  • Family holidays and milestone celebrations on the island
  • Whitehaven Beach, the Great Barrier Reef and sailing days from the marina
  • Corporate incentive trips and retreats
  • Sailing events, with crew and guests arriving together

For weddings and special occasions, read weddings and celebrations by private jet; for larger parties, group and sports team charters.

Combining the Whitsundays with the rest of Queensland

A charter does not have to be there and back. You can fly in to Hamilton Island and out from Cairns, or stop on the Gold Coast on the way north; the one-way legs and the positioning are part of the quotation. Our guide to Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast covers the airports further south.

Island or mainland: Proserpine and Airlie Beach

If your plans are on the mainland, Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine is the alternative. It serves the mainland side of the Whitsundays and the town of Airlie Beach, from where boats run to the islands. For a stay on Hamilton Island itself, landing on the island saves a transfer by road and by boat; for a sailing charter that starts from the mainland, Proserpine can be the better start. We recommend one when we quote, and explain the difference.

When to go

The Whitsundays are warm all year. Winter is cooler and drier, which many visitors prefer; summer is hot and humid with more rain. School holidays and the Christmas and New Year period are the busiest, and the island fills early. Tell us your dates and how flexible you are, and we will say what is available.

A sample plan from Melbourne

  • Day 1: a morning departure from Melbourne, landing on Hamilton Island around lunchtime in a midsize jet, with the afternoon on the island
  • Days 2 to 4: reef and beach days, sailing from the marina, a celebration dinner
  • Day 5: a one-way flight out to Cairns or the Gold Coast, rather than back to Melbourne, if the plan continues north or south

The aircraft does not have to wait for you on the island. A flight in and a separate flight out is often better value than keeping it there for the stay; ask us to quote both. See what a charter costs.

Luggage for a reef holiday

Snorkel and dive gear, golf clubs and a family’s worth of bags add up. A light jet takes proper suitcases and golf clubs; a midsize jet has more space for a full party. Tell us what is coming and how large it is, and we will check it fits.

Plan around peak dates

School holidays and Christmas fill the island early. If your dates are fixed, tell us as soon as you can; if they are flexible, a day either side can widen the choice of aircraft. We quote every trip individually, so send us the route and the date.

Frequently asked questions

Can a private jet land on Hamilton Island?

Yes. The island has its own airport with a runway that takes jets, a few minutes from the resort. Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine on the mainland is the alternative.

How long does it take to fly to the Whitsundays from Melbourne?

About 2 h 55 min by midsize jet and about 3 h 10 min by light jet, over roughly 1,965 km. From Sydney it is about 2 h 20 min by midsize jet.

When is the busiest time?

School holidays and the Christmas period are the busiest. Availability on peak dates is very much subject to continued availability, so ask as early as you can.
