New Zealand is the most popular overseas destination for private jets from Australia. It is a short crossing of the Tasman, there is no long-haul commitment, and the country rewards flexibility: ski fields in winter, lakes, lodges and wine regions the rest of the year.
Four airports to know
- Auckland is the largest airport and the usual arrival point from Australia, with customs and immigration.
- Queenstown is the gateway to the Southern Alps and the ski fields, in a mountain basin on Lake Wakatipu.
- Wellington is the capital’s airport, very close to the city, with strong winds to plan around.
- Christchurch is the South Island’s largest airport, the gateway to Canterbury and the ski fields of Mount Hutt.

Customs, immigration and paperwork
Australia to New Zealand is an international flight, so it clears customs and immigration at both ends. New Zealand asks arriving passengers to complete a traveller declaration, passenger details go to the authorities in advance, and approvals are needed to land at an airport or at a time outside the usual arrangements. We plan all of this and tell you what each passenger needs to carry. See international private flights from Australia: planning for the general picture.
Time difference
New Zealand is usually two hours ahead of Melbourne and Sydney. For a short trip that is a small adjustment, but it matters for meetings and for the opening hours of the airport at the other end.
Queenstown needs extra care
The airport sits in a basin ringed by mountains, with restricted operating hours and approach conditions, so the departure time, the alternate airport and the aircraft are planned together. That is where a private flight’s flexibility helps: if the weather or the hours change the plan, the schedule can move with it. For the winter season, read New Zealand by private jet: the perfect ski trip transport.
Choosing the aircraft
A midsize jet is the usual choice: a taller cabin and more baggage space for a party of six to eight with skis or golf clubs, and comfortable at three hours. A light jet can work for a small party travelling light, particularly from Sydney. See light jet or midsize jet for how to decide, and private jet hire New Zealand for the destination overview.
Seasons and what people go for
The ski season runs roughly from June to October, with Queenstown and the fields around Christchurch the most popular. The rest of the year suits lodges, lakes, vineyards and the North Island’s coast. Peak ski weekends and school holidays are in demand and subject to availability, so ask early.
Skis, golf clubs and other gear
Skis, snowboards and golf bags are routine on a New Zealand charter. A midsize jet has the baggage space for a full party’s gear; a light jet suits a smaller party travelling lighter. Tell us what is coming and how large it is, and we will check it fits. Outdoor and sports gear can carry soil and seeds, and both countries’ biosecurity rules apply, so clean it before you pack.
The flight home
Returning to Australia is also an international arrival, with customs, immigration and biosecurity clearance at an international airport. Food, plant and animal products and used outdoor equipment may need to be declared. We plan the landing airport and tell you what each passenger needs to carry.
Two-airport trips
Because the aircraft goes where you tell it to, you can fly in to Auckland for business and out of Queenstown for the weekend, or in to Christchurch and on to the ski fields. We plan the one-way legs and the ground transport; send us the route you have in mind.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to fly from Australia to New Zealand by private jet?
About 3 h 10 min from Sydney to Auckland and about 3 h 45 min from Melbourne by midsize jet. Sydney to Queenstown is about 2 h 50 min. Times are indicative.
Do we clear customs in New Zealand?
Yes. A flight between Australia and New Zealand is international, so it clears customs and immigration at both ends. New Zealand requires arriving passengers to complete a traveller declaration and passenger details to be supplied in advance, and we plan this for you.
Is Queenstown harder to fly into?
Queenstown sits in a mountain basin with its own operating hours and weather limits, so the flight plan, the alternate airport and the timing deserve extra care. A private flight’s flexibility helps.
