Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Bali are the four Asia-Pacific destinations Australians fly to most. All four are long flights, and the aircraft that can do them are a step up from the ones used inside Australia.
Flying times and aircraft
| Destination | From Melbourne | From Sydney | Class used for the time | Time (Melbourne / Sydney) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Singapore | 6,035 km | 6,295 km | Heavy jet | about 7 h 30 min / 7 h 50 min |
| Hong Kong | 7,410 km | 7,395 km | Ultra long range jet | about 8 h 40 min / 8 h 35 min |
| Tokyo | 8,160 km | 7,820 km | Ultra long range jet | about 9 h 30 min / 9 h 05 min |
| Bali | 4,380 km | 4,620 km | Heavy jet | about 5 h 35 min / 5 h 50 min |
Indicative airport-to-airport times for a heavy or ultra long range jet, using its typical cruise speed; a super midsize jet can also fly Melbourne or Sydney to Bali non-stop. Routes, winds and the exact aircraft change them; our quotation confirms them. See when to step up to a heavy or ultra long range jet for the aircraft.
Singapore
Singapore is a regional financial and commercial centre and the usual first stop for Australian executives heading into South-East Asia. Changi is the major hub; Seletar, in the north of the island, is where much business and general aviation is based. See private jet hire Singapore and Melbourne to Singapore.
Hong Kong
Hong Kong International Airport, on Chek Lap Kok island, has a dedicated business aviation centre for private aircraft. It is one of Asia’s leading financial centres, and trips from Australia are mostly corporate. See private jet hire Hong Kong.
Tokyo
Tokyo has two airports, Haneda, closest to the city, and Narita, east of it in Chiba. Which one takes a private jet, and when, depends on slots and the rules at the time, and we confirm it before we quote. Tokyo is a business destination and a winter-sports gateway, with Hokkaido and Nagano ski resorts a short onward flight or transfer away. See private jet hire Tokyo.
Bali
Bali is the shortest of the four and the favourite overseas escape for many Australians. Ngurah Rai International Airport at Denpasar is the island’s only major airport, and Indonesian landing permits and entry rules apply to every international private flight. Read Bali by private jet: the ultimate escape and see Melbourne to Bali. From Darwin, Bali is about 1,765 km, a useful departure point for the north.
Linking the cities
Many Asia trips are not out and back. A charter can fly the whole loop, with the positioning planned as part of one trip. These are the legs between the four, with the smallest class that flies each one non-stop.
| Leg | Distance | Smallest class | Indicative time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Singapore to Hong Kong | 2,565 km | Midsize jet | about 3 h 40 min |
| Hong Kong to Tokyo | 2,900 km | Midsize jet | about 4 h 05 min |
| Singapore to Bali | 1,675 km | Midsize jet | about 2 h 30 min |
| Singapore to Tokyo | 5,300 km | Heavy jet | about 6 h 40 min |
Indicative airport-to-airport times, using the typical cruise speed of the class.
The shorter legs are well within a midsize jet, which keeps the cost of a multi-city trip in proportion. The long legs to and from Australia are where the larger aircraft are needed, and they are the part of the plan we price carefully.
Time differences
Singapore, Hong Kong and Bali are two hours behind Melbourne and Sydney in winter, and three hours behind when daylight saving applies in the eastern states. Tokyo is one hour behind in winter, and two when daylight saving applies. Plan the day you arrive as well as the day you leave.
What to plan
- Notice. Permits and slots take time; ask early.
- Passports and visas. Check each passenger’s entry requirements; see international private flights from Australia
- Onward legs. A charter can continue to the next city, so plan the whole itinerary, not one flight.
- Aircraft. The class you need depends on the party as much as the distance; we recommend one and quote the alternative if it is close.
Send us the destination, the dates and the number of passengers, and we will quote.
Frequently asked questions
Can a private jet fly non-stop from Sydney to Tokyo?
Ultra long range jets can fly it non-stop. Some heavy jets can reach Japan with a fuel stop. We tell you the options when we quote.
Which airport does a private jet use in Singapore?
Both Changi and Seletar handle private aircraft. Seletar, in the north, is where much of Singapore’s business and general aviation is based; Changi is the major hub. We choose the one that suits your aircraft and plans.
How much notice does Bali need?
Indonesian landing permits are arranged in advance for every international private flight, so allow more notice than a domestic trip. We tell you the lead time for your dates.
